“ Thick paint aggressively applied is bound to assert the physical circumstances of how a painting was done. Stained, scraped, poured, splattered and so on - then allowed to mix on the canvas to find its own course - the painting becomes about the act of painting, the artists physical involvement with it, and the inherent properties of the paint. Those properties are innately malleable and in tis painting the rumbustious physicality is belied by the control of colour. As one reads from left to right yellows bleed through the murky greys and the openly streak and splatter as the painting lightens up. The greys themselves contain a sullen but careful colour - embedded little incidents of red and green find muted harmony in the green and violet inflections of the grey.”

David Nicholson, 1983, Painters Choice Exhibition.
